ORIENTEERING

Orienteering involves the use of a map and compass to find a series of pre-set ‘controls’ hidden in the area. This is a great activity for all ages that requires both physical and mental effort. It also provides a good introduction to navigational techniques and is a refreshing antidote to our over-reliance on GPS systems.

At Thorndon Country Park you can pick up a purpose-made map developed by HAVOC, the local orienteering club and we can provide compasses if you don’t have them.

We also offer:

  • Instruction to help you get started
  • Practical demonstrations and training
  • Group sessions for schools and other organisations
  • Formal curriculum-based sessions focused on GCSE and BTEC

With permanent orienteering courses available in many local parks, once you know the basics you can enjoy many sessions finding your way around areas you probably didn’t know existed.
